Predawn Shadows (on my bedroom wall)” — a piece I labored over for most of January of 2026.


I wanted to capture the enigmatic light and shadows around 4am. They seemed like more than the different shades of darkness. Caught between consciousness and sleeping, between dreams and the landscape of my interior life.


This begged to be put on canvas.


Here are some process pic and my narrative about them below.




Early layers buried light sources can be seen prior the additional darkness. Note the value in the light source (medium-yellow mixed with titanium white more in some places vs. others).


Then before the final two or three layers of yellow light and dark blue.


And the framed final after some serious oiling out.

Last is the original study that I did weeks earlier, idea in gray and white on 8x10”.
